1st ASARECA General Assembly Vol 2: Selected scientific and technical papers ASARECA

This second volume of proceedings presents a selection of scientific and technical papers that were presented at the First General Assembly. It is our wish that this information can contribute to further agricultural innovation and development in the ECA.

1st ASARECA General Assembly Vol 1: Proceedings ASARECA

From December 14 to 16, 2011 ASARECA held its First General Assembly in Entebbe, Uganda, under the theme: Feeding our Region in the 21st Century. The Assembly follows the approval of ASARECA new Constitution in 2010, providing for the establishment of Patron Ministers and a General Assembly. These were established to offer strategic guidance to ASARECA in order to promote economic growth, fight poverty, eradicate hunger and enhance sustainable use of resources in Eastern and Central Africa.

This first Volume presents the proceedings of the First General Assembly which was a big success because of the collective efforts of all the ASARECA stakeholders.

Integrated sorghum and millet sector for increased economic growth and improved livelihoods in Eastern and Central Africa ASARECA

The conference whose theme was Integrated sorghum and millet sector for improved economic growth and livelihoods in the Eastern and Central Africa (ECA) brought together various actors within the region including: farmers (sorghum and millet producers, researchers (who develop technology), inputs and services providers, merchants and marketers, processors, exporters, policy makers and consumers. The conference was used to review and share research results and experiences on sorghum and millets in the ECA region and make recommendations necessary for commercialization.

The domains emphasized included: (a) increased production and productivity; (b) increased processing and utilization; (c) effective marketing; and (d) implementation of supportive policies. In each of these domains, a keynote paper with broad perspectives of sorghum and millets in ECA was presented followed by specific papers on experiences from a diverse mix of actors. Participants discussed the papers in each domain and made recommendations which can be pursued to further enhance the sorghum and millets sector, and make it more effective in contributing to the region economic growth.

Agricultural Innovation system and value chain development approach Eric N. Mwaura

The approaches to agricultural research for development (AR4D) have evolved over time on the basis of changing implementation paradigms; with the most recent being the Agricultural Innovations System (AIS) and Value Chain Development (VCD) approach. The 2 approaches hinge on interactions among the different R&D actors, which enhance innovation, technology adoption and better markets. A major challenge confronting the AR4D community is the understanding of the two concepts and how to integrate them in the design, implementation and evaluation of AR4D.

ASARECA aims to enhance regional collective action in agricultural research for development, extension, training and education to promote economic growth, fight poverty, eradicate hunger and enhance sustainable use of resources in the ECA. As ASARECA embarks on implementation of its second operation plan (2014- 2018), there are increasing demands for ASARECA and its NARs partners to adopt systems and practices of agricultural research that are responsive to farmers needs and sustainably impact on the lives of the poor.  The ILRI BecA Hub is an initiative developed within the frameworks of centers of excellence for science and technology in Africa and aims to provide a common biosciences research platform, research related services and capacity building opportunities for the region.

Recognizing the synergy in their functions, the BecA-ILRI Hub and ASARECA have agreed on collaborative mechanisms for capacity building for the ASARECA less competitive NARS. The focus will be on selected areas such as AIS and Value Chain Development (VCD), proposal writing for resource mobilization, leadership and management and institutional mentoring.

This report is on the 2ndAIS and VCD workshops conducted from 15th 19thSept 2014 at ILRI Campus Nairobi Kenya. The workshop drew participation from a total of 23 participants. The participants comprised of 13senior research scientists representing5ASARECA countries namely Burundi (3); DRC (3); Madagascar (3); Rwanda (1); S. Sudan (3) and10ABCF fellows from various Asareca countries
